Anarchist Discussion Group: Introduction to Anarchism

SUMMARY
Anarchism is a political philosophy that is anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, and anti-oppressive. Anarchists aim to create a directly democratic, ecologically sustainable society based on the principles of freedom, equality, justice, dignity, and self-determination.

In preparation for the upcoming Anarchist Assembly, this facilitated discussion will introduce and explore these, and other, principles and practices of
anarchism. Anarchist criticisms of contemporary politics and economic
structures, as well as anarchist alternatives, will also be addressed. All are welcome.

The Anarchist Assembly is intended to bring together anarchists from the Ottawa-Outaouais area to link past, present and future organizing.

First, there will be a short presentation from people who took part in the organizing of Take The Capital in 2002. They will give their perspectives on what worked, what didn’t and what we can learn from this. This presentation is part of the Assembly’s efforts to learn from the successes and failures of past organizing. If you have ideas for other Ottawa anarchist projects that could be reflected on, contact us at: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org

Next, there will be an hour devoted to presentations by anarchist or anarchist influenced community groups currently. If you are part of an anarchist or anarchist-influenced group in the Ottawa/Outaouais region, then contact us at: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org

Community groups currently presenting include:
· The Industrial Workers Of The World -Ottawa/Outaouais
· The Under Pressure Collective
· The Anarchist Discussion Group
· Critical Mass
· The Panhandlers’ Union
· PGA Block Ottawa
· EXILE Infoshop

Last, there will be a 1½ hour discussion about the purpose and goals of the Anarchist Assembly. One priority will be to give the organizing committee a clear mandate for the next Anarchist Assembly on October 21st. The organizing committee is proposing that decision-making be made by consensus, and that if consensus cannot be achieved, then an 80% majority is required to for proposals to be passed.

There will be whisper translation into French. Children are welcome, and free child-care will be available. Please contact us at least 48 hours prior to the Assembly is you will need child-care: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org

Anarchist Discussion Group: Language & Power

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Language and Power

SUMMARY
Language is a significant component in the mystification of power relation.
This talk will explore some of the ways in which language is utilized as a
means of hiding relations of domination. It will do this by both identifying
the way in which different mediums of communication enable certain forms of
linguistic ‘misrecognition’ of domination, and identify how terms (e.g.
‘freedom’) become associated with being positive and being used to describe
and thus legitimize contemporary society; at the same time as it
delegitimizes alternative social orders. It will also suggest that language
is also a site of social struggle, and thus suggest the possibility of using
language to challenge domination, rather than reproduce it.

Confront Bush, Harper, Calderon @ Chateau Montebello TODAY

Monday, June 11th, 2007
2007/08/20to2007/08/21

August 20th and 21st, 2007
Montebello, QC

A message from PGA Bloc:

This August 21st, Stephen Harper will welcome George Bush and Felipe Calderon to the Chateau Montebello, at a resort town between Ottawa and Montreal, to continue to implement the “Security and Prosperity Partnership.”

We have always known these are the leaders who have done so much for the “security and prosperity” of indigenous people of the Americas; have greatly added to the tip-top happy security of Muslim, Arab and migrant communities through the introduction of such measures as “Safe Third Country”, special registration, “anti-terrror” laws, and the use of the security certificate; are busy securing Afghanistan for the prosperity of others; have done such a fantastic job in raising the security and prosperity of Iraqis (655,000 securely dead since the beginning of the invasion, as of last Lancet study) … and they are here to plan for much more!

While these Heads of States plan to meet on August 21st, the Canadian war machine is preparing for its largest deployment of troops to Afghanistan since 2005. Over 2,000 troops from the Val Cartier base, near Quebec City, will parade in Quebec City on June 22nd before being sent in Afghanistan to maintain a brutal occupation, where the Canadian military has been involved in prisoner abuse and participated in the killing of over 3,600 Afghani civilians since 2002.

We are beginning to coordinate an anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian mobilization this summer.

Anti-Atlantica Summit – Halifax

Friday, June 8th, 2007
2007/06/16

Even though this isn’t happening here at home, it’s important. From June 11-16, 2007, in Halifax, NS.
Check it out. http://resist.stopatlantica.org/ or email resistatlantica2007@gmail.com

The schedule is posted at their website (above), and includes a critical mass, a rally and march, a food not bombs picnic, a reclaim the streets party, a picket and some workshops.

What’s Atlantica? Here’s some basic info from the website:
Atlantica is the abbreviated name for the Atlantic Northeast Eco-nomic Region (AINER), a cross-border trade concept spanning the Maritime provinces, Newfoundland, southern Quebec, and the New England states ( i.e. Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, and upstate New York). Its main proponent and originator is a right-wing think-tank group called the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies (AIMS), whose board of directors represents many big-business interests in the Atlantic region.

The proponents of Atlantica wish to develop a conduit to channel Asian goods to the United States through the Atlantic Provinces. Massive container ships called “post-Panamax” are too large to pass through the Panama Canal and Halifax is the closest North American port for ships from Asia via the Suez Canal. These containers would reach their destinations via “truck trains,” resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions, higher fatal-crash rates per mile, as well as the likely expansion of superhighways through communities, wilderness, and farmland.

Atlantica is also about increasing exports of unprocessed resources, like energy and water, from Canada to the United States. The intent is to export oil and gas from the Atlantic offshore as quickly as possible on terms that favour industry and leave decisions regarding exports to deregulated markets.

The Atlantica tag line is “business without borders,” which has adouble meaning: business unhampered by the international border, but also unbound from what AIMS refers to as “policy distress factors” such as minimum wages, social program spending, environmental regulation, public ownership and unionization. This kind of language is eerily familiar to that of NAFTA and the FTAA, stemming from a neo-liberal agenda that aims to dismantle “trade barriers.”

The results of Atlantica would be to expedite a race to the bottom for the majority of people in the region. Knowing this, the governments and institutions involved have tried to negotiate and implement this policy undemocratically behind closed doors.

The Alliance Against Atlantica (AAA) has formed to bring together grass-roots organizations, labour, environmental organizations, peace groups, religious organizations, students, and anyone who cares about social justice to stand-up and say No to Atlantica! On June 14th, 15th and 16th Premiers, Governors and others that support Atlantica will be meeting in Halifax. Member groups of the AAA a are organizing three days of events including teach-ins, a critical mass bike ride, a march through downtown Halifax, a street party, and a picnic. We invite you to come join us on these days and voice your opposition to Atlantica!

EXILE presents… No Olympics on Stolen Land! A Film Screening and Talk by David Cunningham of Vancouver’s Anti-Poverty Committee

Thursday, June 7th, 2007
2007/06/14
19:00to21:00

EXILE Infoshop & OPIRG-Carleton’s
Indigenous Solidarity Working Group present:

NO OLYMPICS ON STOLEN LAND!
A Film Screening and Talk by David Cunningham of
Vancouver’s Anti-Poverty Committee

==================================
Thursday, June 14th
Ottawa District Labour Council Boardroom
280 Metcalfe Street, 5th Floor
Ottawa, Ontario
==================================

The Olympics must be exposed and confronted and the fightback must
begin now. The effects of the Olympics are far greater than the games
itself – with gentrification of poor neighbourhoods through draconian
policies such as the Safe Streets Act, increasing privatization of
public services, the expansion of sport tourism on unceded indigenous
lands and increased land tenure to corporations, union busting through
decisions such as the 7-year imposed contract handed down to the
BC Ferry and Marine Workers Union, and exploitative conditions for
temporary migrant labour.

Vancouver’s Anti-Poverty Committee has been on the front lines in the
struggle against the 2010 Olympics. Join David Cunningham, an
organizer with the APC, to hear how people are fighting back.

No Olympics on Stolen Native Land!
No Social Cleansing!
No Environmental Destruction!
