A message from PGA Bloc Ottawa:

BUSH AND HARPER ANYWHERE! RESISTANCE EVERYWHERE! PGA Bloc Ottawa Action Planning Meeting to Prepare for Bush’s Visit

We invite all Ottawa anti-capitalists, anti-imperialists, and anti authoritarians to participate in action planning for the arrival of George Bush, Stephen Harper, and Felipe Calderon in Montebello, Quebec, on August 20-21, 2007.

7:00PM
WEDNESDAY, JULY 4TH
ROOM 125 SIMARD HALL
UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA
OTTAWA, ONTARIO

This August 20th and 21st, Stephen Harper will welcome George Bush and Felipe Calderon to the Chateau Montebello, at a resort town between Ottawa and Montreal, to continue to implement the “Security and Prosperity Partnership.”

We have always known these are the leaders who have done so much for the “security and prosperity” of indigenous people of the Americas; who have greatly added to the tip-top happy security of Muslim, Arab and migrant communities through the introduction of such measures as “Safe Third Country”, special registration, “anti-terrror” laws, and the use of the security certificate; who are busy securing Afghanistan for the prosperity of others; who have done such a fantastic job in raising the security and prosperity of Iraqis (655,000 securely dead since the beginning of the invasion, as of last Lancet study) … and they are here to plan for much more !

In coordination with allies from across the Northeast, we are working to organize effective direct confrontations of the Montebello Security and Prosperity Summit and the individuals and institutions that support it. We invite all local anti-capitalists, anti-imperialists
and anti-authoritarians to come together to plan actions that will
disrupt and, if possible, shut down the Summit.

The PGA Bloc Ottawa endorses, and takes as a guide to our organizing, the Hallmarks of the People’s Global Action. These Hallmarks are:

1. A very clear rejection of capitalism, imperialism and feudalism;
all trade agreements, institutions and governments that promote
destructive globalisation.

2. We reject all forms and systems of domination and discrimination including, but not limited to, patriarchy, racism and religious fundamentalism of all creeds. We embrace the full dignity of all human beings.

3. A confrontational attitude, since we do not think that lobbying can have a major impact in such biased and undemocratic organisations, in which transnational capital is the only real policy-maker;

4. A call to direct action and civil disobedience, support for social
movements’ struggles, advocating forms of resistance which maximize respect for life and oppressed peoples’ rights, as well as the construction of local alternatives to global capitalism.

5. An organisational philosophy based on decentralisation and autonomy.

Anarchist Discussion Group: Introduction to Anarchism

SUMMARY
Anarchism is a political philosophy that is anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, and anti-oppressive. Anarchists aim to create a directly democratic, ecologically sustainable society based on the principles of freedom, equality, justice, dignity, and self-determination.

In preparation for the upcoming Anarchist Assembly, this facilitated discussion will introduce and explore these, and other, principles and practices of
anarchism. Anarchist criticisms of contemporary politics and economic
structures, as well as anarchist alternatives, will also be addressed. All are welcome.

The Anarchist Discussion Group meets every second Sunday afternoon. We are local Ottawa activists and community members who share an anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist viewpoint. We are involved in diverse struggles and believe in the importance of maintaining a link between theory and practice. Discussions are based on readings, presentations or short films. If there are readings, they are optional and will be summarized at the beginning of the discussion.

All are welcome. Accessible! Child-friendly!

The Anarchist Assembly is intended to bring together anarchists from the Ottawa-Outaouais area to link past, present and future organizing.

First, there will be a short presentation from people who took part in the organizing of Take The Capital in 2002. They will give their perspectives on what worked, what didn’t and what we can learn from this. This presentation is part of the Assembly’s efforts to learn from the successes and failures of past organizing. If you have ideas for other Ottawa anarchist projects that could be reflected on, contact us at: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org

Next, there will be an hour devoted to presentations by anarchist or anarchist influenced community groups currently. If you are part of an anarchist or anarchist-influenced group in the Ottawa/Outaouais region, then contact us at: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org

Community groups currently presenting include:
· The Industrial Workers Of The World -Ottawa/Outaouais
· The Under Pressure Collective
· The Anarchist Discussion Group
· Critical Mass
· The Panhandlers’ Union
· PGA Block Ottawa
· EXILE Infoshop

Last, there will be a 1½ hour discussion about the purpose and goals of the Anarchist Assembly. One priority will be to give the organizing committee a clear mandate for the next Anarchist Assembly on October 21st. The organizing committee is proposing that decision-making be made by consensus, and that if consensus cannot be achieved, then an 80% majority is required to for proposals to be passed.

There will be whisper translation into French. Children are welcome, and free child-care will be available. Please contact us at least 48 hours prior to the Assembly is you will need child-care: a_ottawa@mutualaid.org
